Our Story

A Living Laboratory that focused on Living

It’s simple: Honda is passionate about developing technology that solves our most pressing environmental challenges—a passion that extends beyond cars. Our hope is that the home facilitates a critical conversation about renewable energy and zero carbon living, and accelerates our efforts to develop technologies that will contribute to a sustainable society.

Who lived here?

Real people. We believe that solutions should be tested in the real world, so over seven years five sets of occupants lived here. We had a family of four, then three friends, two co-workers, a family of three, and finally a couple, one of whom then stayed the final year here solo. Their feedback and the data generated during their stays are our legacy.

What we learned from the people who lived there.

Our occupants had mixed opinions on the house layout and its various systems, but a few takeaways from our experiment stand out.

Pros
  • Natural daylighting is always welcome
  • Compact Plumbing means short waits for hot water
  • Quality Lighting controlled in five scenes improves comfort
Cons
  • Automatic ventilation cooling can be intrusive
  • Reprogramming lights and shades is cumbersome
  • Long time delays while cooling the house can be uncomfortable

The Future

We created this living laboratory to help answer some of the “what ifs,” so that designers and builders can create a future where sustainable, zero carbon living is the norm. It is our hope that this project can be one step toward that vision.
